![]() ![]() ![]() While I’m at it, Sam Neill makes the horrors vivid on his own. The last face-off between the evil force and the last man standing is admittedly a pretty decent reward for the “ milder” treatment earlier. Only when horror escalates, when it spills onto every corner of the ship leaving no other way but to face it – that is the film’s finale – Event Horizon (1997) unlocks its true scariness. In about one or two scenes, the movie goes bloody savage, however, considering the potential that lies within the haunted ship concept, there’s space for more gore. Let me also point out that Event Horizon (1997) withholds from gratuitous violence. The entire cavalry from haunted-house stories checks in – ghosts, strange sounds, and minds losing their shit. Anderson puts these visions of torment to use. Upon entering the haunted spaceship, most crew members begin to experience hallucinations that reflect their fears and sense of guilt, as if the ship scanned their minds. Given the often shoddy quality of space horrors made on tight budgets, Event Horizon (1997) truly nails its scary moments. Event Horizon (1997) is spot-on scary – at times, at least Anderson’s brutally honest – this isn’t a mind-bending masterpiece, but a piece of B-entertainment that quickly gets the ball rolling. Luckily for us, that horribly wrong part arrives early. Once we leave the establishing shots, the camera meanders into the ship interiors that are mostly dominated by shades of green, silver, and black.Īfter we get to settle in a bit, director Paul Anderson concludes the exposition part in just one scene – the platitudinous crew meeting when their fate is about to be sealed by a mission that will go horribly wrong. Fortunately, since most of the story takes place inside either of the two ships, the dodgy quality of space sequences wasn’t much of an issue. CGI appears to be of lower quality than most big-budget sci-fi films – let’s say any of Steven Spielberg’s features from around the same time. Right from the start, Event Horizon (1997) reveals its limited budget. But the moment the crew finds themselves on the mysterious ship, they discover a horrible truth about the effects of its cosmic travels. Weir’s mission is to retrieve a lost-in-space spacecraft Event Horizon, once rumored to be lost during an inter-dimensional journey. Whether you love the splatter of blood or prefer to hide under the couch, Dark Places cuts to the heart of why we are drawn to carnage. When it comes to sci-fi guilty pleasure, Event Horizon (1997) is the full package. Japanese horror films and their Hollywood remakes – such as Ringu and The Ring, or Juon and The Grudge – come under particular scrutiny, as he explores Japanese cinema’s preoccupation with malevolent forces from the past. Dark Places also examines the reconfiguration of the haunted house in film as a motel, an apartment, a road or a spaceship, and how these re-imagined spaces thematically connect to Gothic fictions.Ĭurtis draws his examples from numerous iconic films – including Nosferatu, Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Shining – as well as lesser-known international works, which allow him to consider different cultural ideas of ‘haunting’. He examines diverse topics such as the special effects – ranging from crude to state-of-the-art – used in movies to evoke supernatural creatures the structures, projections and architecture of horror movie sets and ghosts as symbols of loss, amnesia, injustice and vengeance. In this wide-ranging and compelling study, Curtis demonstrates how the claustrophobic interiors of haunted spaces in films connect to the ‘dark places’ of the human psyche. ![]() With Dark Places, Barry Curtis leads us deep inside these haunted spaces to explore them – and the monstrous antagonists who dwell there. Made my way towards the center of the map where they're supposed to be, and then all 4 blips pop up, and the little initiative tracker appears at the top of the screen. Nothing too bad, because they're usually in mechs with less than half the normal armor and normally no reinforcements. Just had a 3-skull mission to hunt down a lance of "old-timers" from a previous war. Then I did and got through with only a couple of mechs losing armour on any location at all. I think this might be why those last two mechs never contributed - they seemed to have some AI instruction not to enter the blast zones, which stopped the AI pathfinding from letting them find a way forward at all.Īnyhow, just funny because I put that mission off for ages, and did a bunch of random missions that I struggled with, all while dreading that ammo mission. Thing is, I know other players said they took out some enemy units by hitting the ammo bins, but in my game the enemy never went inside the blast area. They stuck at the back of map firing some LRMs and not doing much damage, which allowed me to rip apart the lights one at a time. ![]() ![]() What makes me wonder if I just got it easy was the last two enemy mechs, a Thunderbolt and a Wolverine, didn't really do much to support the mosquito swarm of light mechs. A Firestarter lasted a stupidly long time, but given six of the eight mechs were light or on the light end of medium (Cicadas), it wasn't hard to kill them. Instead I just used the Centurion to blow up one turret each turn, while the other three mechs turned to nuking a mech or two each turn. Having read it about it here I was already prepped to let the ammo trucks go, and I saw pretty quickly there was no way I was going to catch them with my force. I took a Grasshopper, modded to drop the LRM and add more heatsinks, a Dragon modded for skirmishing support with AC5, LRM and ML, a Centurion with twin LRM20, and a Wolverine with three SRM6. I'm not a great player by any means, and I've loaded over a few times after missions went really badly, but I did the ammo mission first time without any real hassle. ![]() It only took five tries, though two of those were reloading after my commander dying to random headshots / DFA's when things seemed under control.
